On The Right Foot: This 3D Printing Incubator Is Liberating Engineers (And Much More)

Jimmie Beacham is in charge of a futuristic laboratory in Waukesha, Wisconsin. His team of a dozen engineers is helping 70 GE Healthcare factories sprinkled around world explore 3D printing, augmented reality, robotics, big data and other software and technologies. One group, for example, is looking for ways to quickly and efficiently translate image files of organs from computed tomography (CT) scanners and other imaging machines so they can be printed. “Today, when people print organs, it can take anywhere from a week to three weeks to manipulate the data,” Beacham says. “We want to do it with a click of a button.” Read more.

Here at SouthWorks, we’ve actually done this with some free software named Invesalius. Using CT scans, we printed out a complete head. We cut it open, and you can see the ear canals, tonsils, nasal passages, and more. If we cut it in a different place, we could see even more internal details. The 3D version provides a much better way to view and assess the body than going through 2D slices one-by-one. And it’s free!

Want to Learn to Woodturn?

Share

We don’t have a lathe yet, but we’ve found a great resource for those of you who are interested in learning about and using lathes.

We were visited by a member of the Illiana Woodturners, a non-profit group in South Holland who provide workshops and equipment (5 lathes of various sizes) for individuals to do amazing woodturning projects from bowls to baseball bats.

Workshops provide the opportunity to create a bowl you can take home.

Monthly meetings are the 2nd Monday of the month, 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Special Workshop: Discover SLA 3D Printing for Jewelry Design and Other Intricate Prints

Share

Henry Locke, Maker extraordinaire and creator of Flex Vat 3D printer components, will be at SouthWorks to demo his SLA printers and talk about the technology and uses. SLA printing uses a vat of light sensitive resin cured by a video projector to create amazingly detailed forms- think Terminator with the alien rising out of the vat of goop!

Henry will share his vast Maker expertise and show us how to inexpensively build our own using an old video projector and other miscellaneous parts. At a later date, we’ll do just that in a group build of one for SouthWorks!

Watch a video of the SLA printing a heart!

3D Printing Moves Further Into Normal Manufacturing- Adidas Is 3D Printing Soles of Its New Shoes

Share

Adidas announced that it is going to use 3D printing to create 100,000 pairs of its new, innovative trainer. The 3D print allows them to create a new midsole that will  have varied levels of flexibility and support from spot to spot. Traditional foam midsoles could only provide a single level of each.

The key is using DLS 3D printers which cure resins with light, similar to the 3D printer we will be building here at our MakerLab.

Tall Grass Arts Association Features A “Maker” Artist

Share

Tall Grass Arts Association, right down the block from SouthWorks, is a renowned arts program that has served the region since 1956 by providing classes, featuring Illinois artists in its exhibits, and holding a nationally-recognized arts festival every fall.

Their current installation, Flight of Obscurity X,  showcases the sculptures and various installation elements created by Ohio artist Nathaniel Foley and presented in a significantly transformed space. Foley’s sculpture focuses primarily on aviation process, materials and language and has a distinctly “maker” vibe to it.

Using aviation-oriented materials-from rivets to aluminum skins of fighter jets-  and using construction techniques used in aviation, Foley’s works transport the viewer from the expected white gallery space to this unknown pseudo-military experimental space.

The installation continues through April 15th.
